What to bring when you collect a rental car in Florida

· Amber Car Rental

Most collection problems are the same problem: someone arrives without one specific item and there is nothing anyone can do about it at the kerb. Here is the whole list.

The three essentials

Your physical driving licence. Not a photograph of it, not a scan on your phone, not a digital licence in a wallet app. The card itself. It must be current, and it must be the licence you uploaded when you booked.

The card you paid with, in your own name. This is the one that catches people. The name on the card has to match the name on the licence — a partner's card, a parent's card or a company card in someone else's name will not do, however reasonable that feels at the time.

Proof of insurance that covers a rental. Most full-coverage personal policies extend to rental vehicles and many credit cards add secondary cover. Confirm it with your insurer before you travel rather than finding out at collection.

Upload the licence beforehand

If you photograph the front and back of your licence and add them to your booking in advance, collection is genuinely just handing over the keys.

Two things make a licence photo usable: flat lighting with no flash glare across the hologram, and all four corners visible. The most common reason we ask for another photo is a thumb over the expiry date.

For international visitors

Bring your passport alongside your home licence. If the licence is not in English, you also need an International Driving Permit — that is a translation, not a licence in its own right, so bring both.

Worth having, not required

  • A toll transponder or a plan for tolls. Several Tampa Bay routes are tolled and pay-by-mail carries an administrative fee that is often larger than the toll.
  • A phone mount. Florida's hands-free rules make this genuinely useful rather than a nicety.
  • A towel for the boot if the beach is on your itinerary. Sand is easier to prevent than to remove.

Before you set off

Walk around the car and photograph anything already marked, with the timestamp on. We do a condition report at handover and you will get a copy, but your own photos cost thirty seconds and settle any disagreement instantly.

Check the fuel gauge matches what your agreement says, and confirm you know where the car should come back to.
