Renting a car for spring training in the Tampa Bay area

Grapefruit League spring training is one of the best reasons to be in the Tampa Bay area in February and March, and one of the least walkable. The stadiums are real distances apart, in different cities, and a single rental car is the practical way to see more than one team without building your whole trip around ride-hail pricing at peak times.
Where the teams actually are
Tampa — the New York Yankees train at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Clearwater — the Philadelphia Phillies train at BayCare Ballpark.
Dunedin — the Toronto Blue Jays train at TD Ballpark.
Lakeland — the Detroit Tigers train at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, further out but a manageable day trip from a Tampa base.
These are permanent training homes, not a rotating schedule — the same cities host the same teams year after year, which makes planning a multi-game trip straightforward once you know the map.
Why a car beats relying on rides between games
The stadiums aren't close to each other. Tampa to Clearwater or Dunedin is a real drive, not a short hop, and doing it more than once during a trip adds up fast in ride-hail fares.
Game-day pricing spikes. Ride-hail surge pricing around a stadium at the final out is one of the most predictable spikes in the business — everyone leaves at once, and prices follow demand.
Parking is usually simpler than people expect. Spring training parks generally have straightforward lot parking near the stadium, unlike a regular-season big-league ballpark in a dense downtown.

If you're seeing more than one team, base yourself centrally and treat each game as a day trip rather than switching hotels — the driving is the same either way, and it's less packing. Build in extra time on the drive over; parking lots fill and games start on schedule regardless of how the traffic looked.
