Flat rate or pay-per-mile? How Tampa car rental pricing actually works

Two rental cars can show the same price on the search results page and cost genuinely different amounts by the time you return them. The difference is almost always the pricing model, not the car.
The two models
Flat daily rate. One number, in advance, for the whole day. It typically includes a set number of miles — at Amber that is 200 miles a day — and driving less doesn't refund the unused ones. Driving more than the allowance is billed per extra mile, so a flat rate is not a promise of unlimited driving, it is a promise of a predictable floor.
Per-mile pricing. A lower headline daily figure, plus a charge for every mile driven from the first one. It can genuinely be cheaper for a short, low-mileage trip — a single day parked at a hotel while you attend meetings, for instance — and genuinely more expensive for a road trip, sometimes by a wide margin.
Why this matters more in Tampa specifically
Tampa Bay is spread out. Crossing from Tampa to Clearwater or St. Petersburg and back is close to that 200-mile daily allowance on its own, and a day that also includes normal driving — the hotel, a restaurant, the beach — can push past it. A per-mile quote that looked cheaper on the results page can end up costing more than a flat rate once a single beach day is added to the trip.
How to tell which one you're looking at
Read the unit next to the price. "$X/day" with mileage terms stated separately is flat-rate. "$X/day + $Y/mile" is per-mile, whatever the day rate looks like.
Check what "unlimited mileage" actually excludes. Some flat-rate offers use the word loosely and still cap it — read the cap, not just the headline.
Do the maths for your actual trip, not the average one. A rental company's typical customer might drive 40 miles a day. Yours might not. Multiply your real planned mileage against both models before comparing totals.
