Driving to Clearwater Beach from Tampa: parking, tolls and timing

Clearwater Beach is the single most common day trip from Tampa, and the drive is easy. Parking is not. A little planning is the difference between a five-minute walk to the sand and half an hour circling.
How long it really takes
About 45 minutes from downtown Tampa in ordinary traffic, covering roughly 25 miles.
On a sunny Saturday or a holiday weekend, assume 90 minutes or more. The bottleneck is not the highway — it is the Memorial Causeway approaching the beach, where everyone converges on the same handful of car parks at the same time.
Which route
Two sensible options:
Courtney Campbell Causeway (SR 60). The direct one, no toll, and genuinely scenic — water on both sides for several miles.
Veterans Expressway / SR 589. Better if you are coming from north Tampa. This one is tolled, which matters more than the amount: rental cars without a transponder get billed by mail with an administrative fee attached, often larger than the toll. Sort a transponder before your first drive, not after.
Parking, which is the real problem
The beach car parks fill early and the pricing is not cheap. Two rules cover almost every case:
Arrive before 10am or after 4pm. In between, on a nice day, you are competing with everyone in Tampa Bay.
Have a second choice ready. The main beachfront car parks fill first. The lots slightly back from the sand cost less, empty later, and add a walk you would happily take rather than circling for twenty minutes.
Most beach lots are card or app payment, so do not count on having coins.
Worth knowing
Afternoon storms in summer. Between June and September a heavy shower most afternoons is normal. It usually passes in half an hour and the beach empties while it does, which is not the worst outcome.
Sand in the car. Bring a towel for the boot. It is a small thing that saves a cleaning charge.
Sunset is the point. Clearwater's sunsets are genuinely worth staying for, and the traffic leaving afterwards is much lighter than the traffic arriving in the morning.
