Choosing an SUV for a Florida family road trip

Families default to "the biggest SUV available" and often end up with the wrong vehicle. What actually matters on a Florida road trip is narrower than that.
Boot space beats seat count
A five-seat SUV with a genuinely large boot serves a family of four far better than a seven-seater whose third row eats the luggage space.
The trap is that a seven-seater's boot is measured with the third row folded. Put people in that row and the remaining space is often smaller than a saloon's. For four people with luggage plus beach gear, a mid-size five-seat SUV is usually the better vehicle.
Be honest about the passenger count
If you are genuinely six or more, two vehicles usually works out both cheaper and more comfortable than one that technically fits everyone. Six people plus a week's luggage in a seven-seater means luggage on laps, and Florida in August is not the place for that.
What matters on a Florida drive specifically
Air conditioning that actually copes. Between June and September this is not a comfort feature, it is the whole experience. Any modern SUV manages it; the point is to run it for a minute before you load children in.
Boot height. A lower boot lip makes loading a pushchair or a cool box repeatedly much less painful than a high one.
Rear window shades or tint. Afternoon sun through a rear window on a two-hour drive is the difference between children asleep and children complaining.
Child seats
Florida law requires a restraint for children under six. Add a seat when you book rather than assuming one will be available on the day — this is the single most common thing families forget.
If you are bringing your own, check it fits the vehicle. Three across a middle row is possible in some cars and not others.
What to skip
Four-wheel drive. Florida is flat and paved. You will not need it, and it costs more.
The largest available vehicle by default. A big SUV is harder to park in beach car parks, where spaces are tight and turnover is high. Right-sized beats biggest.
